Los Angeles might not get the vibrant autumn colors of New England or upstate New York, but that doesn't mean fall isn’t a great time to get outside and explore! In fact, thanks to the cool, dry weather, autumn in LA is one of the best times for discovering amazing hikes and trails around the city. Looking for a little outside activity?

Here are the best Los Angeles fall hikes to conquer this season.

Where: Hollywood Hills

Level: Moderate to difficult

Dog-friendly: Yes

Why this trail? It’s just a 3-mile round trip, but it’s fairly rugged and steep, making Wonder View the perfect trail for those looking for a little exercise without having to leave the city. And those views at the top are totally worth the climb—city landscapes that stretch for miles and the iconic Hollywood Sign.

Where: Altadena, Echo Mountain

Level: Moderate to difficult

Dog-friendly: Yes

Why this trail? This 2.5-mile climb up Echo Mountain will definitely make you sweat, especially since it’s mostly steep switchbacks and not a lot of shade (which makes it an ideal cool-weather hike), but the gorgeous city and mountain views at the top are more than worth the effort. You’ll also find a nice picnic spot (left over from the site’s old resort), pieces of the old Mt. Lowe Railroad, and an metal echo phone.

Where: Santa Susana Pass Historic State Park

Level: Moderate to difficult

Dog-friendly: Yes

Why this trail? This 5-mile loop traverses some of the most scenic sections of the Santa Susana Pass Park, and includes breathtaking views of the San Fernando Valley, the Simil Hills, and even the San Gabriel Mountains, the Verdugos, and the Hollywood Hills on clear days. There’s a shorter in-and-back hike on this route, too.

Wildwood Canyon

Where: Burbank

Level: Easy to moderate

Dog-friendly: Yes

Why this trail? This short 2-mile loop is perfect for those looking for a quick climb to amazing views out over Burbank, the San Fernando Valley, and even the Downtown LA skyline. The trailhead park also includes restrooms, picnic grounds, and drinking water for added convenience.

Where: San Gabriel Mountains

Level: Difficult

Dog-friendly: Yes, with caution

Why this trail? The highest point in the San Gabriel Mountains, Mount Baldy is a must-do for serious hikers in the LA area. It’s a grueling climb to the 10,064-foot peak, and there are two trails to take you there—which combine into a 11.3-mile loop hike with roughly 3,900 feet of elevation gain. It may seem like a long trek, but the panoramic views from the top are more than worth the effort.
